A range is two appliances behind one badge, and they fail independently. The burners live on the manifold; the cavity underneath has its own igniter, fuse and thermostat. Knowing which half has gone quiet is most of the diagnosis, and it costs nothing to work out over the phone.

Oven quit while the cooktop carried on, in a kitchen you cannot turn around in. A thermal fuse and a scorched wire at the terminal block. He worked off the back porch to keep the mess out.

Knobs on the right side had gone stiff enough that my mother could not turn them. He stripped the stems, cleaned out years of baked-on spill and re-greased. They turn with one finger again.
